Friday night was a successful night for the Diner as we hosted our first ever Diner Stars Competition. There were 8 competitors that had applied prior to the event and the line up consisted of a variety of styles of singers.
The evening was hosted by Natalie Gray and Olivia Heap from the resident Viva Cast- who now answer to the names Ant and Dec or Chuckle Girls. The evening also consisted of debut performances from our new singing servers Stephanie and Emily who recently got offered a position following the auditions held earlier this month. Sam Cummins from the Viva Cast also got the crowd going with his flawless renditions of feel good favorites during his 2 spots in the break and at the end of the night.
The bar area of Viva Vegas Diner was set up with balloons, a stage , judges table and sound booth and was packed full of competitors, their supporters and members of the public looking for a great night of free entertainment. The competition judges were The Directors of Viva Martin Heywood and Leye D Johns who both scored each act out of 10 on their voices as well as their overall performance. They were both thoroughly entertained and impressed by the standard of the vocalists and Leye D Johns stated ‘Well done to everyone involved, Martin and I loved it! All the Viva staff definitely did us proud and we are more than ready for the next one!’
The running order meant that each competitor performed for the judges and audience once and then if successful had a second song waiting. The first round was extremely entertaining with a range of songs and styles being presented, including Ed Sheerans’ Perfect, That’s Amore by Dean Martin and even an original song about Blackpool Illuminations; sang to the backing track of Diamonds by Rihanna. After a quick break the second half consisted of 4 acts being randomly called back in no particular order to perform again. The competitors were all extremely talented and even got the audience clapping, swaying and singing along.
The first winner of our new event Diner Stars was extremely talented Hannah Mortford. Hannah was visiting Blackpool with her family to see the Viva show Voulez Vous show on Thursday evening and sang along to the every single song. At the end of the show, which celebrates the music of Abba, Head Dancer Natalie Gray was talking to her and after finding out she was a singer encouraged her to apply for Diner Stars the following evening, and we are so glad she did! During the competition Hannah sang beautiful versions of Ed Sheerans’ ‘Perfect’ and ‘All of Me’ by John Legend. She was definitely a worthy winner of the cash prize and a voucher for a meal at the Diner as she left both of the judges extremely impressed.
